Yosemite Nature Notes - 15 - Moonbows

It is located Southeast of Lexington, KY. Fall Creek Falls State Park.

The park encompasses more than 26, acres sprawled across the eastern top of the rugged Cumberland Plateau. Laced with cascades, gorges, waterfalls, streams and lush stands of virgin hardwood timber, the park beckons those who enjoy nature at her finest. Fall Creek Falls, at feet, is one of the highest waterfalls in the eastern United States. The route would be Indianopolis-Lexington-Knoxville-Asheville.

Going through Cincinnati, you should stop at a local place and try the famous 3 way chili that they serve in Cincinnati. Some places have way chili. Knoxville makes a good stop too. The center of Knoxville is prettier than you'd think. The best route to Asheville is drive via Gatlinburg drive right through, it's just a tourist trap , and go through Smoky Mountain national park.

Get out of the car at Newfound Gap, and do at least a short hike on the Appalachian trail. Really you can hike endlessly in the park, for days. Asheville is maybe an hour from Newfound Gap. The other thing you should try to include is a Georgia Sea island. Jekyll island is easy to reach from Savannah, but the real prize is Cumberland island. For that you need a 2 hour drive south from Savannah to St. For this you need an advance reservation with the national park service. I drive this every fall, and we normally go from Chicago to Shaker Village between Louisville and Lexington night one, then from there head to Asheville via If you want to break that up, consider Cumberlands Falls a night, great hiking there, and if full moon, a Moon Bow over the falls I go to Knoxville for work times a year and don't consider it worth spending any time in, prefer a natural landscape ins tread of concrete.

Charleston is a lovely areas and 3 nights is just enough. I didn't care for Savannah in comparison, a tad too cheap feeling tourism wise, though a bicycle tour thru the historic areas is a treat.

Thank you. I did wonder about Savannah. Any recommendation for a place to stay in Shaker Village, Cherokee and Asheville? Great hiking suggestions. I don't think I'll have enough time on this trip for a lot of hiking, though.

It's not "on the way" unless you go out of the way to make it so. There isn't as much to do there relative to Charleston, so unless "relaxation" is your goal, you may find yourself wanting to move on sooner. Knoxville is well past its prime. However, look to see if Tennessee is playing when you're down there. That'll make it worth the stop, even if you just hang out with the tailgaters beforehand.
