These techniques can all help you to read more quickly, but are they appropriate for what you're trying to achieve? Effective speed reading is a balance between pace and comprehension. Studies have found that the faster you read, the less information you take in, particularly when it comes to remembering detail.

So, speed reading is clearly not the answer if you're reading a complex legal or technical document, even if you are pushed for time. Similarly, it would be sensible to slow down if the material you're reading is new or unfamiliar, or if you have to teach it to someone else. When you need to understand only the basic arguments or conclusions being presented, though, using a speed reading technique can work.

This may especially be the case if you intend to go back and re-read something more slowly when you're less busy. In fact, one study has suggested that skimming a text can improve your comprehension second time around. Generally speaking, if you want to memorize something, you'll need to read slowly, at less than wpm. A normal rate for learning is wpm, and for comprehension it is wpm. Speed reading is normally done at a rate of around wpm. Anything above wpm means sacrificing comprehension, although this varies from person to person.

Knowing the "how" and "when" of speed reading is only the first step to success. Here are some more tips to help you:. Speed is not the only way to improve your reading. There are different techniques that you can use to improve your reading speed. All of them involve skimming a page rather than "sub-vocalizing" each word as you were likely taught at school. Excellent speed reading involves practice and retraining yourself, as well as learning to focus more on what is in front of you and avoiding distractions. But it is important to strike the right balance between speed and comprehension: sometimes speed reading is not appropriate or helpful.

Most people think that starting a fire from scratch is a difficult skill to learn. Something to daunt survivalists with years of experience. Well, most people would be wrong. While it's great to be able to repeat them to others, we cannot remember everything that crosses us. By learning to remember the significant words we cross, we become better at instilling them within ourselves. If it's important enough to remember, it's probably important enough to embody. If you are a student, learning to have a sharp memory is even more important.

Being able to memorize large amounts of classwork will keep you churning ahead of your peers. For the rest of us, memory is more like a muscle. It is built through work, repetition and training. It is a skill that needs to be fostered, trained and built. Check out some of the best memory exercises below to learn more about building a powerful memory skill. Think about basketball. You have two guys practicing. Both spend one hour practicing. The first guy is running around doing a bit of everything. He does some jump shots. He practices dribbling. He chases after balls as they get away from him. He is not focused on his practice, he tries to do everything. Now, guy number two is focused. He uses deliberate practice. He spends his hour practicing shooting from the key. He has a coach with him to catch his missed shots, gives advice on improving his shots and make sure there is little or no downtime.

The laser focus on a particular type of shot, means guy number two's practice will be FAR more effective than the same amount of practice time as the first guy. This is the power of deliberate practice.

Deliberate practice is a keystone habit. Once you learn to practice deliberately, everything you practice in life becomes easier to learn because you know how to build your skills the right way. Many people encounter a problem and immediately react with an emotional, erratic train of thoughts.

We pretty much all learned how to skim in the age of internet and online newspapers, so skimming is not something that is unknown to us, but many speed readers like to skim through text.

So, avoid the filler text and try to find the main chapters where the most valuable information is presented. Improving your reading speed takes time and a lot of practice, so grab a few books and just start reading as much as you can. Great article and resources. Any suggestions for adults who have a great deal of struggle with comprehension, critical thinking and logical reasoning? Thanks for your help and insight. After remembering the course I took that talked about the Scientific Theory and how to find the answer via Scientific Method of Reasoning. It was a little similar. It always starts with a premise and truth seeking.

In order to find a vital strong argument, you must use critical deductions. If your argument is weak then the Premise is not valid. So you have to start over with a new Premise and test your hypothesis……Test your thesis statement. Now think Critically and weigh both pros and cons. To make it simple, If you have an idea and look for the truth in you idea and find it is true after researching it you have completed your critical thinking!

Good Luck! Remember Practice Makes it Easier! Thank you this is very help full, in my opinion get better it takes practice and patience. Before you know it. Thanks for list. And I understand what you mean that some of speed reading is more like skimming. Not by just practicing skimming faster. I increased the speed I am comfortable with a bit baseline and if I want to read faster than that, and sacrifice a bit comprehension, I can still get the main ideas a lot quicker. For example, do I really want to deeply understand every single example authors use to explain their ideas?

Not necessarily. So for me, once I became realistic about my expectations, it totally works. You might want to consider proofreading a bit more diligently. I love speed reading….. I just started using my curser and followed with my eyes. Before I knew it I had finished my Week 2 — chapter 4 assignment. Now my reading was probably not 1, But it was closer to wpm. Great article.
